Victorian Accesories

Of the many Victorian accessories, necklaces were popular during this period including a bracelet with a small watch at the center. The watch was often covered with items such as enamel casing. If a lady was bored at a long social occasion, she could trigger a spring that would open the casing, revealing the time behind her behind her fan. Much like today, it was considered rude to look at your watch in public since it gave the impression that you were bored or eager to leave. An interesting asset when it came to Victorian accessories was makeup. Make-up included: “pearl-powder, violet-power, rouge, bistre for the eyelids, bella donna for the eyes, white-lead and black-lead, yellow dye and mineral acids for the hair.” (Gernsheim 56) Another accessory included the lace handkerchief which was a symbol of wealth. For summer wear, sunshade spectacles were handy of a hinged nature. Though it was hot in the summer, modesty was the desired goal. Sleeveless blouses made of either lace or muslin was worn over the main dress. Victorian accessories came in many forms and were crucial when it came to defining a lady's dress.
