Georgian Jewelry

Georgian jewelry was often inspired by nature with images of birds or foliage etched into jewelry. Colored stones such as sapphire, emeralds and rubies were the centerpieces of Georgian jewelry. There was also the counterbalance of morbid themes called momento mori which translates as remembering death. Images of skulls and coffins were also incorporated into jewelry, a throwback to the middle ages when images of skulls was woven into art.

Women would even adorn their hair with miniature guillotines during an impending execution in France.

The designs that were often designed around precious stones included cannetille which was gold or silver wiring delicately spun in a filigree style of coils and spirals. The chatelaine is a chain-like design usually reserved for earrings. Chokers and short necklace rivieres was also in vogue.

The following should give you a good visual of what kind of jewelry people wore during the 18th century.
