Victorian Canes

Victorian canes came to symbol the status of a gentleman. It was not only the suit that made the man, but the Victorian cane came to symbolize class and status. Victorian canes were mostly were reserved for old men who may have had a disease such as gout, but sometimes younger fellows could be seen sporting Victorian canes whether for show or because of an injured leg. Victorian canes were often made of the finest timber with the handles finely decorated with fine jewelry. The handles could also be carved in the form of animal heads, gems and marble. Victorian canes were not only for show, but also made useful weapons in the guise of a sword or pistol.

A gentleman who could afford could approach a gunsmith and ask him to turn the handle of his cane into a pistol. If a gentleman happened to be strolling around the east end of London and an attacker approached he could simply detach the handle of his cane and fire on sight. Victorian canes could also be swords in disguises. Should close quarters combat become necessary, a gentleman could unsheathe his cane sword and become ready for a duel in an instant. These types of lethal canes became fashion accessories within themselves and were only reserved for those who had the means to purchase such quality, Victorian canes.
